Colossians 3:1-9, 12-14
I am sure that more than a few of us have looked into our closets and thought to ourselves, “Well, it’s about time I clean this thing out!” You can almost get lost in there amongst all the old t-shirts and worn-out jeans that we have not worn in years.
We think, “Man, those jeans fit just right.” These are our comfortable clothes, and we just do not want to give them up. For the sake of our closet space, we must.
Our hearts, much like a closet, contain all of the old emotions and habits we once wore. These things are like a second skin to us. God (whose authority is much more than that of the fashion police) wants us to put these things away.
“…get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.” – Colossians 3:8
We must “put to death the sinful, earthly things.”
If we are faithful in taking off these rags, God tells us what to put on.
“…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” – Colossians 3:12
God will not leave us bare; He wants us to be clothed in His virtues and attributes. We are called to be more like Him, shrouded in love. He promises us peace if we just clear out all traces of the old man. It is about time we cleaned out that closet!
